Step 1 – See How to Make Split Red Lentils (Laal Masoor Dal)

Time needed: 20 minutes

There are many ways of cooking Split Red Lentils (Lal Masoor Dal). Some people cook Laal Masoor Dal by roasting spices. But the traditional Masoor Dal (Split Red Lentils) is prepared without roasting the spices. In traditionally way we cook Dal by simply adding all the spices along with Dal. So we will go with same traditional Indian style of Lal Masoor Dal Recipe.

We will make this simple Laal Masoor Dal, a Tadka Masoor dal by giving it a Tadka (Sauté) of Asafetida (Hing) and Sliced Garlics or Sliced Onions. And this Tadka will double the taste of your Masoor Dal. So follow these simple recipe instructions for this delicious Tadka Dal Recipe (Split Red Lentils Recipe).

  1. Wash 500 Grams of Split Red Lentils (Laal Masoor Dal) well.

  2. Measurement of water quantity for making Lal Masoor dal is simple.

    If you want your Lal Masoor Dal to be of little thick consistency, then keep the water quantity 2 times of Masoor Dal (Pulse) quantity.
    But if you like your Masoor Dal (Lentils) little runny, then take the water quantity 3 times of Dal quantity.

  3. In our recipe we are making or Red Lentils of little runny consistency, so we will take 1.5 Liters of water (3 times of Red Lentils Quantity) in a pressure cooker.

  4. Add spices directly into the water. In traditional way, we do not roast the spices but add the spices directly in water.

  5. So add 1 Tsp Salt, 1 Tsp Red Chillies Powder, 1 Tsp Turmeric Powder and 1.5 Tsp Coriander Powder to the water.

  6. Add 1 Tsp Ginger Garlic Paste, preferably homemade.

    (To make Ginger garlic paste at home take 40% Ginger and 60% Garlic and grind them with little water to make a fine paste. You can preserve this homemade Ginger Garlic paste for about 15 days in refrigerator)

  7. Add 1 Nos sliced Onion and 1 Nos chopped Tomato.

  8. Now let the water come to a boil at high flame.

  9. When water starts boiling, add 500 Grams washed Lal Masoor Dal (Split Red Lentils) in pressure cooker. Mix well and cook covered up to 2 whistles at high flame.

  10. As when you get 2 whistles in your Masoor dal, switch-off the gas and leave the cooker as it is for 5 minutes.

  11. After 5 minutes release the cooker pressure, open the lid and mix your Laal Masoor dal once.

  12. Then add 4 to 5 Nos chopped Green Chillies and ¼ Cup chopped Coriander leaves. Mix well.

  13. Though our Lal Masoor Dal is ready at this stage but still there is one important step left here.

    Yes we are talking about giving it the India famous “Tadka” (Sauté). And yes, this is the India’s most popular Tadka which makes our normal Masoor Dal, the tasty Tadka Masoor Dal.
